It’s one of the first data-oriented hackathons in Europe, allowing participants to work conceptually on real (but fully anonymized) medical data from hundreds of COVID-19 patients - including results of laboratory testing and imaging diagnostics such as x-rays and computed tomography of the lungs.<h4 style="text-align:justify;">Hack4Med: CRACoV will be held in Krakow on the weekend of October 16-17, 2021, at the New Headquarters of the Krakow University Hospital, 2 Jakubowskiego Street.</h4>The main goal of this year's edition will be to create an innovative tool that will allow for the automation of COVID-19 risk prediction, known as a covid risk calculator, which will aid doctors in predicting the course of an individual's illness. The tool is intended to be used by the medical staff of the Krakow University Hospital (one of the event's main partners), so your efforts will have a real impact on people's lives.<blockquote>"The goal of the hackathon is to produce a seed of solutions that will have a chance to become real software helping clinicians in the nearest future," said Marcin Jędrychowski, the Director of Krakow University Hospital.&nbsp;</blockquote>And if you want to challenge yourself with a slightly different task, you can also try to create a program that estimates the likely degree of lung involvement in COVID-19 patients, or an app that informs users about the effects of COVID-19 on muscles.<blockquote>"We hope that solutions presented by the participants of Hack4Med will allow a patient with COVID-19 to be quickly assigned to one of three groups: one with a mild course of the disease, one with a severe course of the disease, and one with a high risk of death," said Karol Przystalski, co-organizer of the event. “We intend to use modern solutions to identify non-obvious instances," he added.&nbsp;</blockquote>The competition's jury and mentors include experts in programming, data science, and artificial intelligence, as well as Krakow University Hospital representatives from various medical disciplines who work with COVID-19 patients on a regular basis.The Hack4Med: CRACoV Hackathon final will feature the 25 best teams (limit of 5 people per team) - a total of over 120 high-level specialists. They will work in different rooms but will have access to the same data. One of them was a need to build a space dedicated to tech-community representatives. <h2>PART 1: SUMMARY OF 2022</h2>With the beginning of 2023, we’re coming back with the Growth at Codete cycle. This time we’re talking with the Codete founders – Artur Olechowski, Karol Przystalski, and Grzegorz Greg Śmiałek.What did this 2022 look like on the market for each of them? What surprised them, and what made them the most proud of Codete? We’ve been talking about all of this and more right after New Year's Eve, when it’s the perfect time to make plans and set goals for the next 365 days.&nbsp;Dominika: How was 2022 for all of you, from a professional point of view?Artur: I’m happy that we improved the results compared to 2021. The first few months of 2022 were spent on headhunting talented employees. We succeeded in building a complex organization managed by a group of people who have a real impact on Codete’s direction of development, not only by the executive board.Joining Exadel Group [in November 2022, Codete started the cooperation with Exadel Group, the global software engineering company focused on delivering digital transformation and building novel IT products for Fortune 500 enterprises – author’s note] was a very important event, too, and it definitely required a huge effort from the entire company. In 2022, we enhanced a lot of systems and processes. Our business teams grew, which let us keep developing. It was all possible thanks to people, and that’s why it makes me so glad and proud that everything went so smoothly.Karol: All of the things Artur is talking about happened despite different kinds of crises.Grzegorz (Greg): I’d only add that 2022 was marked not only by the pandemic but also by investments in digitalization. It was a fruitful time for Codete if we talk about strengthening our recruitment capabilities because the number of projects snowballed. We were investing time and money in employer branding and brand image, and the results of these actions were noticed by the organizers of the <a href="https://wyzwaniahr.pracuj.pl/hr-dreamteam/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">HR Dream Team</a> competition, in which Codete received an award for having one of the most innovative HR teams and engaged IT teams.I’ve been thinking about how to raise the subject of the war in Ukraine. This occurrence has revised our plans, without a doubt, just at the beginning of the year. We’ve been launching a lot of activities aimed at helping people with whom we’re cooperating in this region, as well as at all the employees, like psychological support.Artur: Definitely, the war has caused a lot of challenges, but it has also completely changed the “distribution of forces” regarding the software development talent pool in Europe. At Codete, we managed to create a really harmonious community composed of IT enthusiasts from outside the organization, too. It let us keep the balance and take care of “this mixture [Codete] to be stable”. &nbsp;Dominika: What was the best thing that happened to you, regarding Codete, in this passing year?Grzegorz (Greg): Despite a pandemic, a war, and other challenges, we are still seeing an increase in development. So, I want to thank the whole Codete team for the whole year of 2022. They are the reason why everything we're talking about here works.Artur: I’d also add putting together a self-directed team of mid-level managers. Plenty of our employees have been with us for a long time, have learned a lot, and managed to reach the current level by themselves. Of course, it happened under our watch, but the need and willingness to develop came directly from the Codeters. In my opinion, it’s worth mentioning that we aren’t blaming Codeters for making possible mistakes. Instead of that, we put an emphasis on learning, drawing the consequences, and taking responsibility for taking ownership.Since the very beginning, we have been promoting independence and taking ownership of the results., and in 2022 we found people who decided on this kind of self-reliance. &nbsp;Dominika: Codete has recently teamed up with Exadel Group. What are the benefits of this partnership?Grzegorz (Greg): The possibility of further development of an already big project – that’s for sure. From a historical point of view, Codete has been expanding dynamically, and joining a bigger group like Exadel will enable us to share the expenses, increasing the number of clients and projects for our developers.From the employees’ perspective, we became a safer employer that guarantees the stability of employment and development to its team. In the long run, I think Codeters will have more chances to move up, like taking global roles, etc.Exadel is a key player in the US, while we are the same in Europe. This is why we are a great match for each other. The changes are also visible on the map of Poland. Codete has its regular offices in Krakow and Lublin, and now our employees can also regularly work from the spots belonging to Exadel (for example, in Gdansk)."We’ve thought that we’d need much more time to reach Exadel’s size, but thanks to the cooperation with this global company, we can achieve leap growth right now – much earlier than we’ve been assuming. That’s an undoubted advantage, too.Artur: Exadel brings a lot of interesting news for Codete's employees. Some of them concern the new locations (Bulgaria, Georgia), and others are about sharing knowledge, which we started doing when we brought Codete’s and Exadel’s communities ​​together. Thanks to the cooperation with the global company, we can take part in large-scale competitions and tenders, which would be impossible for us if we stayed in the previous shape.Aside from the highly qualified team, Codete gives this partnership “a friendly face”, a local feel that encourages all the employees to act. <h2>PART 2: PLANS FOR THE FUTURE</h2>This time, let’s talk about Codete’s goals for 2023. Which countries do they plan to visit? And what will the international IT market look like, according to Artur, Karol, and Greg? Check it out by reading the 2nd part of the “Growth at Codete” interview.&nbsp;Dominika: Can you reveal a few of your plans for 2023?Artur: Among the company’s goals, we have been implementing OKRs [Objectives and Key Results – author’s note] as well as maintaining or increasing our revenue and the pace of development.Grzegorz (Greg): We have a purpose of becoming a regional leader in providing certain services all the time. We keep adding other Salesforce and cloud areas to the list, we keep developing our competencies, and the profile of our client is constantly evolving, so we’re trying our best to fit in.Internally, we’re planning to continue expanding the company’s structure and carry on with the recruitment process in south Europe – in Bulgaria and Romania.It’s clearly visible that finding a client is becoming more and more challenging, so in 2023, there will be a lot of emphasis put on this aspect, too.Karol: Our conferences (business, sales, EB, and recruitment as well) are very ambitious, so the calendars for the next 12 months are bursting at the seams. Visiting our current clients in German-speaking countries, Scandinavia, Israel, and soon, the United Kingdom.Karol and Artur: There’s DLD in Tel Aviv ahead of us [DLD TLV 2023 conference – author's note], we’ve visited Zurich and plenty of other places recently. Now it’s time for the conferences to re-open in a stationary form after the pandemic, so there will be no shortage of opportunities to hear about us. [laughter]Karol: In 2019, it was me who presented at the conferences, but throughout these few years, it changed, and now we have many people who are perfect for the role at Codete. That’s why we want to broaden the subject pool and increase the number of speakers from the company. We also plan to talk not only about AI [artificial intelligence – author’s note] but other interesting topics, too. &nbsp;Dominika: Do you have any predictions for the shape of the IT market in 2023? Maybe you suspect in which direction it will develop in the next 12 months?Grzegorz (Greg): Right now, we’re talking a lot about the crisis, recession, and changes. We have been through rough times before, so we know how to handle this one. The market analysis shows that some sectors stand out during the crisis, like online sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the diversification of our clients in terms of the industry, geographical location, and size, we can quickly react to changes taking place in the market and adjust our strategy accordingly to the current situation.We’re looking at 2023 with a great dose of optimism because we can see the potential in a couple of industries. We’re planning to shift considerable strength to marketing and sales activities. In the first quarter of the year, we’d like to build a client base that will let us work smoother in the future.Getting new senior-level employees is another step so that we can add to our pool of talent.The synergy with Exadel and reaching out to the clients that were difficult for us to reach before, as well as gaining new contacts – are our goals for this year too. We’re still waiting for the official performance results from 2022, but we already know that they’re better than it was assumed. That helps us believe that in 2023 we’ll beat the record as well. [laughter] In short, we’re focused on further development.Karol: To me, it's more like trying to read tea leaves. [laughter] I’m wondering if this crisis that is on everyone’s lips now won’t “blow out” soon and spread to other sectors. But in this case, it’s difficult to predict anything.Artur: In my opinion, in the next few months, the IT market will change a bit regarding technological aspects. The emphasis will be on different areas than now – for example, cloud solutions. If talking about the employee market, I think that we’ll see stabilization there. The amount of work will decrease compared to the time right after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. That’s why in 2023, it will be crucial to provide Codeters with as many interesting projects and challenges as possible and to add these new achievements to their portfolio.&nbsp;Dominika: How about trends in your fields of activity? Can you already say something about what will be hot and crucial for the IT companies' development in the upcoming year?Grzegorz (Greg): HealthTech and BioTech are clear trends for 2023, and from my point of view, CyberTech will also be trending, precisely speaking – the safety issues. Their significance was shown by both the war in Ukraine and the constantly growing amount of data, together with AI development. Sometimes we can see that artificial intelligence “invades” some areas where it begins to shock us. At the same time, we are more and more courageous to use its capabilities, and it will probably not change, at least soon.Karol: If talking about my predictions for 2023, data science is at the forefront of development. Many companies have changed their approach to data and have started automating their processes after the pandemic. It has all positively influenced the meaning of cyber security.Artur: In this less stable time, many decision makers will look for a chance to reduce costs and gain alternative sources of income. In my opinion, for many companies, these changes will mean digitalization. I also think that all the stuff related to cloud solutions and their financial or performance optimization will be critical in these next 12 months, too. It’s worth monitoring all the industries that keep growing now, like energy or finance, and stepping aside from those that will most probably slow down in the next few months, like e-commerce.Another case is sustainability, which will definitely still be promoted by many companies in 2023. It results from a couple of factors: energetic transformation – a change in the way countries approach the topic of electricity usage, as well as the increase in the value of the coefficients on the impact of the energy footprint on company valuations. This is evident in the US stock exchange, where ‌social responsibility plays a key role.Karol: Until now, we’ve been living in the front-end world where JS [JS = JavaScript – author’s note] ruled, and today there’s time for the transformation of basic web applications into much more complex customer-oriented apps. I reckon that the Java Script trend will last for some time, it will keep growing steadily, and at the same time, areas related to data security, infrastructure, management, and optimization will be strengthened.&nbsp;Dominika: Which technologies and areas have, according to you, the greatest chance for development in 2023?&nbsp;Karol: Working in the HealthTech industry, I can see that the solutions there are as if from another era, years back, so they definitely need to be upgraded. Almost everything is to be changed, starting from the cloud, through the way of data storage, to transformation from desktop to web versions of the tools in use. <h2>PART 3: CODETE THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS CREATORS</h2>Do you want to know what the most valuable lesson gained by Codete’s executive board so far was? Or maybe you’re curious to read more about Artur, Karol, and Greg’s fields of interest? All of these and more can be found in the third part of the interview below.&nbsp;Dominika: Building Codete the way it is now, what was the most critical moment, in your opinion? Which event, achievement, or award? Or maybe something completely different?Karol: Building mid-level management was a giant leap for the entire company. I’d also add <a href="/services/consulting" target="_blank">consulting services</a> that are now also delivered by Codete and help us build the position of an expert in the market. Our employees show their knowledge of interesting topics, and clients receive comprehensive assistance in the sensitive areas of their projects.Artur: I’d say that this event was the opening of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/techies.krakow/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Techie’s</a> [resto-bar in Krakow, created by Codete and dedicated to knowledge-sharing between technology professionals and enthusiasts – author’s note]. And I’m not thinking only about the gastronomic aspect but also the fact that this place has become a part of the organization, its daily routine, and its culture.Thanks to Techie’s, we can show the best things that we have from a slightly different perspective than other companies. In my opinion, this place conveys all of our values, and that’s how it enables the local community to access them, e.g., knowledge-sharing culture.Additionally, Techie’s was created despite the current situation on the market, against the tide, and yet it works great and strengthens our position.Grzegorz: You’re right. Last year there were over 1000 participants in total in our events at Techie’s, and we had between 2 and 3 meetings per week. This resto-bar is a perfect tool for building and enhancing our branding and sales aspect. &nbsp;Dominika: How about the most valuable lesson you have already taken while being on the Codete board?Artur: It’s non-stop learning! [laughter] These lessons keep changing all the time, and sometimes we joke that every year we do another MBA [Master of Business Administration, post-graduate studies for management – author’s note]. Undoubtedly, this project teaches us how to accept failures and draw conclusions instead of focusing on frustrations.It’s very important to delegate tasks to other people and to trust your employees, but it’s also quite difficult when you have to look at someone doing something differently than you would. Sometimes we need to watch someone making mistakes that we’d probably make as well, but after all these years with Codete, we already know that it’s worth waiting for the final result.Grzegorz (Greg): What I’d add to what Artur has said is the communication aspect. Today, we know that it should have always been high on the priorities list. Since the beginning of Codete, this topic has been very important for our employees, and it was visible in the regular satisfaction surveys sent to the entire team. Unfortunately, we thought it was enough to do some work on this issue just once, but that’s not true. As the company took 2 steps forward, everything changed again, and a new communication model had to be devised.Summing up: Working with people and communicating clearly in which direction we are heading - these are the areas that have been funding us the biggest lessons in the Codete for years.&nbsp;Artur: But today, we’re taking part in this interview, so apparently, it all works! [laughter]Now, let’s focus a bit on each of you separately. We already know that at Codete, Karol is responsible for the IT sector and cooperation with Fortune 500 companies, Artur takes care of the sales and marketing departments, and Greg is the Managing Director of HR and recruitment processes.&nbsp;Dominika: Greg, compared to the previous years, how has the model of work at Codete changed since the beginning of the pandemic, according to you?Grzegorz (Greg): I remember when we were recruiting the first employees, and there were just a few of us sitting by a small table. The market has changed completely since then, and I’d never believe that it’s possible for it to transform so much.From my perspective, the biggest change was the replacement of work in the office for the home office. Our habits and routines have changed, and even if it didn’t affect us so much at Codete because we’re hiring people from over the world, we still had to face communication, social, and integration challenges.We have made a lot of effort to make the newcomers onboarded online, and the fully remote employees feel part of Codete. Initiating meetings and creating working groups – that’s what we brought to life.Today, there are more and more people complaining about the lack of possibility of coming to the office; that’s where the idea of coworking came from. The non-monetary benefits have also changed. Right now, there’s a Worksmile platform that enables everyone to choose the activities or products that suit them the most at the moment. &nbsp;Dominika: Karol, do you remember your beginnings in the IT sector? How has it changed since then, and if you were to choose your field of interest once again, would it still be machine learning?Karol: The first PC in my house appeared when I was 8-9 years old. It was Commodore 64, and that’s where it all started. [laughter] My proper work in IT began at IBM when I was in my first year of studies. The reality in Poland was totally different from today’s, and my workplace was one of just a few IT companies in the country. Today, I can safely say that Poland, and especially Krakow, have become one of the software development centers in Europe. This change is “cosmic”, and the city itself also became a perfect academic background from where young, talented employees are acquired to companies all over the world.Grzegorz (Greg): You know, I’m sure that after all these years spent with us, Karol could easily go to law school! [laughter], [Greg and Artur studied Law at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow – author’s note]Karol: When I was choosing AI, it was very interesting for me, but we can’t say that it was trendy. It was definitely hard, and someone even said that “you have to have at least a Ph.D. degree to work with machine learning”. That’s definitely not true, but throughout all these years, everything has changed, and machine learning has become hype. But how will it be in 5 years from now? And would I choose the same path once again? Machine learning is, for sure, a very interesting subject, and that’s why I chose it, but who knows how it would be…?&nbsp;&nbsp;Dominika: Artur, talking about marketing and sales, I’d like to ask about the most common mistakes made by those who plan to promote their IT startups or new tech companies and build their personal brands.&nbsp;Artur: When you start, you don’t know what to focus on because you do not know what the market’s response to your activities will be. When setting up Codete, we were beginners who didn’t understand the market’s needs and were guided by feelings rather than knowledge.From a time perspective, I already know how crucial it is to choose the direction of development, to decide what you really want to focus on, and to adjust your offer to specific clients' needs and requirements as much as possible.It’s also worth answering the following questions: Who is your client? What do they follow in their work? Today, I know that while developing Codete, we could have put more emphasis on just one persona instead of creating plenty of them simultaneously. I’m totally aware that some things are difficult to be predicted, but sometimes it’s good to take a risk because only that way you can save a lot of costs and become a leader in the niche you have chosen faster.If you want to develop and see the results, it’s good to be interested in broadly understood economics, marketing, and growth. It doesn’t have to be the knowledge focused only on client profiling. Try to understand what can be a “hot topic” next year to predict what the future will bring to us.Some time ago, I used to spend quite a lot of time listening to audiobooks about storytelling. I was listening and learning how to tell interesting stories about the chosen topic. This activity taught me it’s more important to explain to your audience how they can help their potential client than to “sell yourself” to them.
